At a Glance: a Typical Day

Fern Hill offers a hybrid approach to learning that focuses on both in-classroom learning together with dedicated time outdoors each day for learning in nature. Our curriculum is both academically rigorous and creatively imaginative, with a heavy emphasis on social emotional learning, exploration and discovery. Admission to the school is open to students from all backgrounds, and we strive to maintain a diverse student population which helps to promote an enriching experience for the entire learning community.

Mornings

We begin the day in our classroom space at the recently-renovated 19th century carriage house on the Milton Public Library campus. In the morning, students receive intentional instruction in reading, math and writing. Students work in small collaborative groups to extend their individualized instruction. For example, with their teacher, younger learners may read a book with short vowel sounds focal to the lesson objective. Students then move to thoughtfully-designed centers with manipulatives and natural materials to build letters and words that reinforce the concepts introduced in direct instruction.

The free will of all students is respected and honored in our approach to how the physical classroom space is designed and used. Students enjoy flexible seating or standing arrangements in class and, as long as a student is engaged with learning, their physical geography within the classroom is of little importance.

We use the natural environment’s invitation to learn in our indoor space, which contains many natural elements taken from the outdoors. We further take advantage of the outdoor learning spaces that surround our school building, as it is located within the beautiful and idyllic setting on the grounds of the library at Rose Hill.

Afternoons

Following lunch, we spend our afternoons outside, continuing our learning in the outdoors settings on our campus.

Afternoon school days offer a rich opportunity for thematic exploration through a variety of subjects such as art, music, science, and social sciences. By integrating these disciplines, students engage in learning experiences that provide students with a holistic and immersive learning experience while fostering interdisciplinary connections and encouraging them to think critically and creatively about the world around them. This approach not only enriches their academic knowledge but also prepares them to be informed, engaged citizens who can navigate complex global challenges with empathy and insight.

Wednesdays in the Woods

On Wednesdays, the school travels to one of several sites for an extended outdoor learning experience. Previous locations have included Milton State Park, Montour Preserve, and Riverside Campground. This time gives students an unparalleled opportunity to realize our commitment to nature in learning. While at these locations, students are free to explore within nature, work on projects, engage in creative play, learn to manage risk, and build resilience.
